If you don't have MKX and plan to buy it, I suggest you get MKXL as you have a more complete version of the game for $10 to $20 more (if you get a brand new physical version). Be wary not to buy the German physical version of the MKXL second-handed as it comes with a code to download the DLC characters which might not be valid anymore.

The X-Ray will be the easier option execution wise, but as far as pure damage goes, using your X-Ray in a combo will almost never be worth it. However, X-Rays almost always have some degree of invincibility or armour, which makes them great wakeup/reversal moves, or just something to use if an aggressive opponent leaves holes in their attack
